Tatyana Khutor spoke on compensation for damages caused by Russia's war against Ukraine

At the international panel discussion Delivering Justice for victim states, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland and the Polish Embassy in the UK, Tatyana Khutor commented on the topic of compensation for damages caused by Russia's war against Ukraine.

The purpose of the event was to discuss realistic ways of collecting reparations to compensate for the damage caused by the war. Therefore, it is very valuable to exchange experience with international colleagues who are handling reparations cases against Germany.

The main idea is that it is futile to hope that Russia will voluntarily compensate Ukraine for the damage caused. Therefore, the international community should make efforts to collect compulsory reparations.

How can this be done?

🟢 It is necessary to understand that the solution to the issue lies in the legal plane, not to put the property rights of the aggressor above the rights of the victim, and the financial interests of Western economies above human rights.

🟢 State immunity is often cited as one of the obstacles to the recovery of sovereign assets. That is why the fastest way for Ukraine to receive reparations is not to satisfy individual complaints, but to transfer assets out of court, i.e. to implement the Global Compensation Mechanism.

We are moving further towards the global goal of recovering Russian assets to compensate Ukraine for the damage caused by the war.
