International Register of Damage from Russia: how to apply and when to expect results
The International Register of Damages Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine is already accepting applications for the first category - damage or destruction of housing. Andriy Klymosyuk told delo.ua about the prospects and features of this mechanism.
The purpose of the register is to collect all the information about all the damage caused to Ukraine by the aggression of the Russian Federation in a single database to understand the real number of victims of the war and the approximate amount of money needed to compensate for the damage.
Currently, there are more than 40 categories of damage. However, it is not yet known what amounts the victims can expect. The World Bank estimates Ukraine's losses at almost $500 billion, but this amount does not take into account property damage, deaths, injuries, and displacement. It also does not take into account how much Ukraine has already spent to support the victims of the war.
It is crucial to understand that Ukraine, like any other country, cannot cover these costs, nor should it. It is Russia, as the aggressor state that caused the damage, that should compensate for it.
The International Register of Damages is the first part of the Global Compensation Mechanism, which unites and directs the efforts of more than 40 countries to achieve real compensation for damages at the expense of Russia and its accomplices.
