The Prime Minister of Belgium announced the creation of a special fund to support Ukraine, which should be filled with taxes on income from Russian assets
Tetyana Khutor spoke about this topic in more detail on Ukrainian Radio.
It should be understood that frozen Russian assets continue to generate income. Euroclear, an international depository in Belgium, reinvests Russian money and earns income from it.
Since the assets of the Russian Federation are subject to sanctions due to the war, the profits from them also remain blocked in the depository. Accordingly, the enormous sums that Euroclear receives are excess profits that were actually made because of the war in Ukraine. And the taxes levied by Belgium as a state on these revenues are also constantly growing precisely because of the war in Ukraine.
Therefore, transferring the tax to Ukraine as a victim of the war is a fair and consistent decision.
Why 1.7 billion is not yet the final amount and whether it will become an international precedent - in the programme.
