Against the backdrop of the G7 decision to allocate $50 billion to Ukraine from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets, the question arises of the possibility of compensation for losses to individuals and legal entities
This, as well as the International Register of Losses, is explained by Andriy Klymosiuk for Suspilne Chernihiv. The link is in the commentary.
According to the analyst, the Register, the first component of the international compensation mechanism that was created in record time in world history, has already been launched.
‘It should be understood that at this stage we are only talking about fixing the damage, specific payments will be madeonly after the launch of the relevant Commission and filling the fund. However, there is no doubt that such compensation will be made sooner or later,’ emphasizes Andriy Klymosiuk.
The register contains more than 40 categories of damage, which will be opened for filing applications gradually. ‘Now it is important to collect as much evidence as possible to prove that the damage was caused by Russian aggression, as well as to confirm the amount of damage, if possible. Then there will be a higher chance of receiving proper compensation from the assets of the Russian Federation in the future,’ the expert noted.
At the same time, the funds transferred to Ukraine from the proceeds of Russian assets are unlikely to be used to compensate for the damage, and will most likely be spent on current financial expenses and defense in 2024 and 2025.
