How can seized assets in Ukraine be effectively sold? What helps in the transparent sale of collaborators' property? What challenges does Ukraine face in the sale of assets abroad?
Taras Ryabchenko, Project Manager at the Institute of Legislative Ideas, shared his experience and knowledge on the effective management and sale of seized assets in Ukraine, especially property belonging to collaborators, for Hromadske Interactive Television. He spoke in detail about Ukraine's challenges and successes in achieving a transparent and efficient sale of such assets and outlined the main aspects of this process.
According to the expert, one of Ukraine's challenges is selling seized property abroad, particularly Viktor Medvedchuk's yacht, which was seized in Croatia. Although the process of selling such property outside the country is extremely complex, Ukraine is actively cooperating with international partners to ensure its effective management.
In the case of Medvedchuk's yacht, the seizure was imposed by a Croatian court based on a Ukrainian decision, which was an important step in international legal cooperation. However, several factors, including the influence of lawyers and attempts to appeal the decision in Croatian courts, significantly complicated the process.
Despite the obstacles, Ukraine continues to insist on the reinstatement of the seizure and is ready to start a new stage of the asset sale through international auction platforms. The involvement of international auctions will increase transparency and trust in the process, as well as increase the chances of a successful sale of the property on favorable terms.
‘In times of war, we must act as quickly as possible, as these funds are then invested in military bonds, bringing benefits to the state budget. The more assets are sold, the more money will go to the budget,’ concludes Taras Ryabchenko.
