The Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal has submitted a draft law to the Verkhovna Rada that proposes to introduce exams in the Constitution, Ukrainian language and history to obtain Ukrainian citizenship.

This means that in order to obtain Ukrainian citizenship, a person must pass exams on the fundamentals of the Constitution of Ukraine and the history of Ukraine, the procedure for which is established by the government.

In addition, a person must confirm the appropriate level of proficiency in the state language, which is determined by the National Commission on State Language Standards.

At the same time, the draft law defines certain categories of persons who do not need to immediately confirm their level of knowledge of the language, the fundamentals of the Constitution of Ukraine and the history of Ukraine.

This applies to

  • persons who have outstanding services to Ukraine;
  • persons whose admission to Ukrainian citizenship is of national interest to Ukraine;
  • persons performing military service under contract in the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Such people submit a relevant application in which they undertake to pass the exams within 2 years from the date of acquiring Ukrainian citizenship. Failure to pass the exams may be grounds for the loss of citizenship.
