The process of confiscating Russian assets is extremely difficult for Western partners.

There are no appropriate legal mechanisms for this. Ukraine, having developed its practice, should promote similar models in other countries, including those where Russian assets are located.

The Institute of Legislative Ideas is actively promoting these mechanisms both among official representatives of these countries and among their expert community - think tanks, NGOs, etc.

Why?

Because they are often the soft power that gives the green light to certain changes. And the perception or rejection of new instruments in each particular country depends on their understanding.

To this end, the Head of the ILI Tetyana Khutor presented the Ukrainian model for representatives of European think tanks that are members of the global network UNCAC Coalition.

Unfortunately, as of now, only Canada has implemented a special procedure in its legislation that allows for the confiscation of assets of both sanctioned persons and Russian state assets.

More information on the situation with compensation for damages and confiscation of Russian assets can be found on our Confiscation Tracker, an interactive website that displays up-to-date information on amounts, legislation, court decisions, and political positions of countries on confiscation.
